...so I started formulating an essay on draconian culture in my head while I was in the shower, covering things like how they view mating and children, and the laws Teyr probably has regarding such.

I need your help, f-list.

The major legal and economic benefits of marriage, and not just the United States ones, either. Also, military benefits. Give them to me.

The biology info, I can ttly find on my own.

Well, basically the institution of marriage is a legal contract recognizing a long-term romantic relationship. Originally this was for the benefit and purpose of having children, as an extension of the evolutionarily-favored mating-for-life habit exhibited by often-successful parents.

That's not to say that this mode was the only successful parenting model, but for whatever reason, it because the most prevalent (in the human species.)

The idea is that two parents who stay together while giving birth to and raising children are better able to provide for themselves and the children, and split the work. Because...

And here's where chat made all this spitballing useless.

Also, it's a business partnership, symbolizing a power exchange or unity between two families!

o hai, it's Kuroi with fun links about both the economic and legal benefits of marriage! :D

http://www.religioustolerance.org/mar_bene.htm -- Specifically for the United States, if you scroll down to the bullet-points.

http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_family/family/cohabitation_and_marriage_legal_differences.htm -- Specifically for the UK... I think a lot of it's the same, though.

http://www.unmarried.org/common-law-marriage-fact-sheet.html -- Common-law marriages, although that's for the US only.

I hope that helps!
